The
Asia Regional Training Workshop of the Commonwealth Youth Ambassadors
for Positive Living began today at CYP Asia Centre and will continue up
to the 10th of February, 2007. For the first time, UN and other interntional
agencies such as UNAIDS, UNDP, UNODC and Constella Futures Group and the
State Aids Control Society of Chandigarh are collaborating with the CYP
Asia Cenre in the conduct of this Workshop with UNAIDS providing funding
support also. The inaugural function of the workshop was held today in which the Governor of the State of Haryana, Dr. A.R. Kidwai was the Chief Guest and delivered the inaugural address. Dr. Kidwai called upon the youth to create awareness among the people regarding HIV and AIDS which has ruined the lives of millions of people in the |
world.
He added that young people have the onerous responsibility of fighting
against this disease not only for their own sake but for the sake of humanity
as well. They have to play a stellar role preventing the spread of this
disease as well as the spread of substance abuse in their respective countries.
The Govenor exhorted the young people to become role models in their countries
in providing care, support and treatment services to those infected and
affected by the HIV virus and similarly work for rehabilitation of drug
addicts. He lauded the CYP Asia Centre in organising the workshop on such
an important theme which is affecting millions of people in the world.
Dr. Kidwai stated that deep understanding, tolerance and active cooperation
was necessary for r ealizing the dream of one world where there will be
free movement of goods and human beings. In his welcome and introductory address, the Regional Director of CYP Asia Centre, Mr. Raj K. Mishra stressed the need for involving the youth in the planning and implementation of policies and programmes designed for young people in the field of HIV/AIDS and substance abuse. He called upon the Youth Ambassadors to take up the gauntlet of halting the spread of the HIV virus and that of substance abuse in their respective countries. Mr. Hassan Shifau proposed a vote of thanks to all those present among whom were representatives of patner agencies, government officials, NGOs and the media. The workshop is being attended by 30 participants drawn from all Commonwealth countries barring Singapore. |
